The 88th UCI Track World Championships took place from August 26th to 30th, 1998 at the Vélodrome de Bordeaux Lac stadium in Bordeaux . 32 nations competed in twelve disciplines. Around 30,000 spectators attended the competitions.

The dominant team at the World Cup was the French team in front of their home crowd, which was often perceived by athletes from other countries as "too nationalistic". France alone won six gold medals.

There was a scandal in the team pursuit for third place in the small final: The Italian team protested because the French team had illegally replaced a driver at short notice. The protest was recognized, so that the French could only start with three drivers. As a result, the French team did not even start. The cycling : "Italy was declared under the shrill whistling of the French fans who did not want to follow this correct decision, the winner of this race."

Outstanding was the performance of French rider Félicia Ballanger, who won two gold medals in the sprint and time trial and thus achieved this double for the fourth time in a row. In addition, she set a new world record over the 500 m.
