Asier Maeztu Billelabeitia (born October 14, 1977 in Donostia-San Sebastián ) is a Spanish cycling trainer and former track and road cyclist .

Athletic career

Asier Maeztu won the bronze medal in the team pursuit at the 2004 UCI Track World Championships in Melbourne , together with Carlos Castaño Panadero , Sergi Escobar and Carlos Torrent . At the Summer Olympics in Athens , the Spanish four-man in the same line-up also won the bronze medal in the team pursuit. The following year he was together with Mikel Gaztañaga Spanish champion in Madison, in 2009 he repeated this success with Martzel Elorriaga . In the 2008 season he won a stage in the Vuelta Ciclista Chiapas on the road . In the same year he started again at the Olympic Games in the team pursuit and finished seventh with the four from Escobar, David Muntaner and Antonio Miguel . In 2011 he became the Basque time trial champion . In 2015 he ended his cycling career after failing to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .

Professional

After the end of his active cycling career, Asier Maetzu worked for the sales department of a bicycle manufacturer and became a coach of the Basque track cycling team in 2016 ( as of 2019 ).
