Daniela Larreal
Daniela Grelui Larreal Chirinos (born October 2, 1973 in Maracaibo ) is a Venezuelan racing cyclist .
Athletic career
Daniela Larreal took part in the Olympic Games for the first time in 1992 as a 19-year-old , where she competed in the sprint in the track cycling competitions. However, she did not make it into the placement ranks. In total, Larreal started at five Olympic Games by 2012, each time being represented in the sprint competition. In this discipline she achieved her best results in 2000 and 2004 with eighth place. At the 2012 Games , she was ninth in the Keirin competition and finished seventh in the team sprint , together with Mariaesthela Vilera .
The 1.67 m tall Larreal was particularly successful at South American championships. After finishing third at the Venezuelan road championship in 2001, she won two gold medals in the sprint and keirin as well as a silver medal in the 500-meter time trial at the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador in 2002. In 2003, she also won two silver medals in the sprint and keirin at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo . She was an outstanding athlete at the Bolivar Games in 2005, from which she returned with four gold medals (500 m time trial, individual and team sprint and keirin). Daniela Larreal became the Pan-American track champion three times: in 2005 in Keirin , in 2011 and 2012 in team sprints with Mariaesthela Vilera .
Between 1999 and 2012 Larreal took part in six UCI track world championships ; her best result was a fifth place in the sprint at the UCI-Bahn World Championships 2003 in Stuttgart . At the Keirin competitions within the Track Cycling World Cup 2006/2007 , Larreal won the Los Angeles race on January 21, 2007 and was sixth in the cup final.
She was also successful at the Pan American Games in 2011 . There she reached the silver medal rank behind Lisandra Guerra in the sprint and won gold in the keirin.
Trivia
Daniela Larreal's father, Daniel Larreal , was also a successful Venezuelan cyclist. In addition to her sports career, Daniela completed training as a sports teacher. She publicly advocated the policies of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez , which meant that she was boycotted by parts of the conservative press in her country.
