Cycling career
Robert Slippens began his career in 1999 with the AXA Cycling Team . At the UCI Track World Championships in 2004 he won the bronze medal with Danny Stam in the Madison , in the scratch he secured silver. A year later he also won the silver medal in Madison with Stam at the 2005 UCI Track World Championships in Los Angeles . He was also very successful with him in six-day races. In the 2005/2006 season they won four times together, they won a total of eleven six-day races.
Slippens took part in the Olympic Games four times: in 1996 he started in the team pursuit (12th), in 2000 also in the team pursuit (7th) and in the two-man team (8th), in 2004 in the two-man team (14th) and again in 2008 in the team pursuit (5th).
On August 29, 2006, Slippens had a bad crash in a road race in Belgium. He broke his collarbone three times, broke ten ribs and torn his lungs. The following winter he had to sit out in the six-day races.
Trainer
On December 3, 2008, Robert Slippens announced his retirement from professional cycling, as he had never fully relied on the consequences of the serious fall in 2006. Then he was the national coach of the endurance track riders in the Dutch cycling association Koninklijke Nederlandsche Wielren Unie (KNWU) until 2012 . Since then he has been working as a freelance entrepreneur and trainer (as of 2018). In 2018 he was appointed to the Presidium of the KNWU.
