Joanna Rowsell-Shand , b. Rowsell , MBE (born December 5, 1988 in Sutton ) is a former British cyclist. She is a two-time Olympic champion. She was five times world champion, four times European champion and won gold once at the Commonwealth Games .
Athletic career
Joanna Rowsell had her first major international success in 2008 when she first became world champion in team pursuit at the World Track Championships in Manchester (with Wendy Houvenaghel and Rebecca Romero ). In 2008 she became the European team pursuit champion.
In 2009 , Joanna Rowsell became world champion in team pursuit for the second time (with Wendy Houvenaghel and Elizabeth Armitstead ) and in 2012 for the third time, with Danielle King and Laura Trott . In the same composition, the British won the gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London , twice in one day improving their own world record , which they had set in April 2012 at the Rail World Cup in Melbourne .
In 2016 Rowsell-Shand was nominated for participation in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . Together with Katie Archibald , Elinor Barker and Ciara Horne , she became an Olympic champion in the team pursuit. In March of the following year she announced her retirement from active cycling; she wants to work as a trainer in the future.
Private
In an interview, Rowsell said she started cycling in school just because math classes were canceled. The sportswoman suffers from circular hair loss and is almost bald. Rowsell said she wore wigs for years. Through cycling, however, she has gained so much self-confidence that she no longer hides her nakedness. She is active as an ambassador for the Alopecia UK association .
Joanna Rowsell is an older sister of cyclist Erick Rowsell . In May 2015 she married the former cyclist Daniel Shand and has been called Rowsell-Shand ever since .
Honors
Joanna Rowsell was honored with the induction into the Hall of Fame of the European cycling association Union Européenne de Cyclisme . In January 2013 she was awarded the Order of the British Empire .
