Dame Sarah Storey , b. Bailey , DBE (born October 26, 1977 in Manchester ) is a British swimmer and cyclist . Until 2016 she took part in seven summer Paralympics .

Athletic career

Sarah Storey was born with a deformed left hand. In 1992 she started as a swimmer at the Paralympic Games . Until 2004 she won a total of five gold, eight silver and three bronze medals in various swimming disciplines at the Paralympic Games under her maiden name Sarah Bailey.

In 2005 Storey switched to cycling because of an ear infection. At the Paralympic Games in Beijing in 2008 , she won the individual time trial on the road and the single pursuit on the track . In 2008 and 2009 she became British champion (the open championship) in the singles pursuit, qualified for the British team (the open championship) at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and finished sixth in the singles pursuit. In January 2011 she was one of the British four-man track who achieved the second fastest time in history at the Track Cycling World Cup in Manchester (3: 19.757 min.); that same year she finished third in the British championship in the individual time trial. In November 2011 she won the 2011/2012 Track Cycling World Cup in Cali together with Laura Trott and Wendy Houvenaghel in the team pursuit. Despite these achievements, the British cycling association British Cycling informed her in December 2011 that she would not be part of the line-up of the track four for the 2012 Olympic Games in London . In 2014, Sarah Storey became the British points race champion .

At the UCI Paracycling World Championships 2011 Sarah Storey was two-time world champion in time trial and in the single pursuit (C5), at the UCI Paracycling World Championships in 2012 she was able to repeat this double success. In 2014 she became world champion in the pursuit, in the time trial she took bronze. At the UCI Paracycling World Championships in 2015 in Apeldoorn , she was again two-time world champion.

At the Paralympics 2016 in Rio de Janeiro , Sarah Storey was the most successful cyclist with three gold medals in the individual time trial and in the race on the road as well as in the single pursuit on the track.

Honors

In 1998 Sarah Storey was named Member of the Order of the British Empire , in 2009 Officer of the Order of the British Empire and in 2013 Dame Commander . In 2008 she was also nominated for the Laureus World Sports Award for disabled athletes.

In 2017 Storey was elected to the athletes' commission of the paracycler of the UCI World Cycling Association together with the Irish Colin Lynch .

Private

Since 2007 Sarah Storey is married to the cyclist Barney Storey , who leads visually impaired athletes as a tandem pilot .
