John Archibald (born November 14, 1990 in Edinburgh ) is a Scottish cyclist who competes on track and road .

Athletic career

In 2016 and 2017 John Archibald was Scottish champion in the individual time trial , in 2015, 2016 and 2017 in the team time trial . In 2016 he finished third at the Scottish Road Championship. In 2017 he won the Tour of the North national stage race .

From 2018 Archibald drove for the Huub Wattbike Team on the track and became British champion in the points race . At the Commonwealth Games , he finished second in the single pursuit . Together with Daniel Bigham , Ashton Lambie and Jonathan Wale , he won the team pursuit at the fourth round of the Track Cycling World Cup in London . He was also fourth in the British championship in the individual time trial on the road.

At the beginning of 2019, John Archibald became two-time British champion, in the singles and in the team pursuit (with Daniel Bigham , Charlie Tanfield and Jonathan Wale ). In the qualification he drove a time of 4: 09.584 minutes, which was the second fastest time ever driven in this discipline over 4000 meters. He was around two seconds slower than the current world record holder Ashton Lambie (4: 07.251 minutes), but Lambie set this time at the Pan American Championships in Aguascalientes , Mexico , which is over 1,800 meters high, while Archibald drove his time in Manchester at sea ​​level .

After the Tour de France winner of 2018 , Geraint Thomas , his start at the UCI Road World Championships 2019 in September in Yorkshire had canceled, Archibald was nominated in his place for the time trial.
