Milngavie , [ mɪlgaɪ ] or [ mʌlgaɪ ], Gaelic : Muileann Dhàibhidh , is a suburb of Glasgow in Scotland . It is approximately eight miles from downtown Glasgow in the East Dunbartonshire district . The starting point of the West Highland Way is in Milngavie . Between 1825 and 1914, the Tambowie whiskey distillery , which is important nationwide, was operated near Milngavie .

Most of Milngavie's residents commute to Glasgow to work or study. Milngavie is on the Scottish Railways SPT's North Clyde Line , which connects it with Glasgow. It is a popular recreational area with an unusually high proportion of senior citizens.

The name Milngavie is translated from Gaelic . Hence the difference between the spoken and written name. The Gaelic name for the city is "Muillean Dhàibhidh", pronounced "Mulin Ghah-ie ([ muːlɪnɣʌwi ])", which means "Mill of David". The Gaelic letter combination bh is usually translated into English as v , even if the pronunciation here corresponds to a (English) w .
