Stephen Pate (born January 25, 1964 in Melbourne , Australia) is a former Australian cyclist and world champion.

Stephen Pate was an all-rounder on the cycling track: in Ghent in 1988 he became world champion in track sprint . In 1990 in Maebashi he was third in the sprint World Championship, in 1992 second in the Keirin in Valencia , in 1993 in Hamar second in tandem and in 1996 in Manchester second in the Madison (with Scott McGrory ).

1993 won Pate with Tony Davis , the Six Days of Noumea . In 1998 he became Australian Champion in Madison (with Matthew Allan). He set world records over 1000, 500 and 200 meters.

Stephen Pate was considered a "madman on the bike" during his active time. He stood out for his clothes and hairstyle, drank alcohol, took drugs and was finally tested positive for steroids at the UCI Track World Championships in Stuttgart in 1991 , whereupon he was stripped of the bronze medal in the sprint. In Japan, where he took part in the Keirin series for several years, he was very popular because of his unconventional nature. However, his doping and other misconduct meant that he was not particularly popular in the Australian Cycling Federation and was never nominated for the Olympic Games.

After Pate was again not nominated for the Olympic Games in his home country in 2000, although he was Australian champion, he retired from cycling. In the following years he was repeatedly charged with drunkenness and violence against his wife, which is why he had to spend some time in prison.
