Georges Auguste Joseph Paillard (born February 12, 1904 in Saint-Gemmes-d'Andigné , † April 22, 1998 in Angers ) was a French cyclist and two-time world champion.

Athletic career

Georges Paillard made his debut as a racing driver at the age of 14. In 1920 he started at the Olympic Games in Antwerp in the sprint , but could not place. In 1922 he became French sprint champion. The following year he won two road races, Paris-Dieppe and Rouen-Le Havre . He then turned professional and specialized in standing races .

Twice, in 1929 and 1932, Paillard was world champion , and in 1930 he finished second. Six times he was French champion of professional stayers. In 1937 he won the Critérium des As .

Georges Paillard also set up some records: On March 29, 1937, he reached a new top speed of 137.404 kilometers per hour behind motor control on the cycling track of Montlhéry . In 1949 he increased the hour record to 96.480 kilometers.

Honors

The velodrome of Noyant-la-Gravoyère bears the name of Paillard.
