Friedrich Karl Albert Hermann von Kehler (born October 1, 1820 in Berlin ; † June 7, 1901 there ) was a German politician of the Center Party . He played a leading role in Berlin's Catholic milieu .

origin

His parents were the Prussian major general Karl von Kehler (1769–1847) and his second wife Amalie Wilhelmine Friederike Juliana Marie Beate Countess von Schwerin (1787–1843). The MP Rudolf von Kehler (1827-1919) was his brother.

Life

Kehler studied law in Berlin from 1840 to 1843 and then entered the Prussian administrative service. He rose to the position of Legation Councilor in the Foreign Office . He left the civil service in 1866 and became administrator of the property of Prince Boguslaw von Radziwill .

In 1849, Kehler had converted from Protestantism to Catholicism in Cologne. He became involved in Catholic associations and in 1853/54 co-founded the Catholic Reading Association ( K.St.V. Askania-Burgundia ) in Berlin, the founding corporation of the KV . In 1870 he was one of the founders of the Center Party and the Catholic daily Germania . From 1872 he was chairman of the supervisory board of the Germania publishing house and at times also influenced the work of the editorial team.

Kehler acted as a founding member of the center faction in the Prussian House of Representatives ; between 1870 and 1898 he was a member of parliament. In this capacity he first represented the West Prussian constituency of Marienwerder 7 (Konitz - Schlochau) from 1870 to 1873 , then from 1873 to 1876 the constituency of Düsseldorf 4 (city and district of Düsseldorf). In a by-election on May 30, 1877, he was re-elected to the House of Representatives in the constituency of Cologne District 4 (Sieg - Mülheim am Rhein - Wipperfürth) and represented the constituency until 1898. On September 29, 1871, Kehler was elected as a substitute member of the constituency Düsseldorf 10 Mönchengladbach elected a member of the Reichstag . He represented the constituency until 1898, but despite his long membership in the Reichstag he never took part in debates.

In Berlin he was the chairman of the center's party organization there. In 1872 Friedrich von Kehler was one of the initiators of the Association of German Catholics , for a long time he was a member of the board of directors of St. Hedwig's Cathedral and from 1875 was chairman of the church council. He also co-founded various other Catholic associations in Berlin, including the Caritas Association. In the end, Kehler became honorary chairman of the Catholic associations in Berlin and died at the age of 80 in the capital's St. Hedwig Hospital.

In the funeral speech, the prince-bishop's delegate from Breslau, Prelate Karl Neuber , called him "the embodied Charitas" because of his charity ; the journalist Fritz Nienkemper said at the grave that Friedrich von Kehler was the realization of what the apostle Paulus wrote in the letter to the Corinthians about love.
