Marcel Wüst (born August 6, 1967 in Cologne-Klettenberg ) is a former racing cyclist who won a total of 10 sprint stages at Grand Tours . He works as a freelance promoter and moderator .
Vita
Marcel Wüst grew up in Cologne-Klettenberg, attended elementary school in Cologne-Bickendorf and did his Abitur at the Kreuzgasse grammar school .
Wüst was able to achieve over 100 victories as a sprinter and won 14 stages in the great tours of the Tour de France , Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España , making him only the second German to succeed. At the Tour de France of 2000 he was able to win the dotted jersey (which he then wore for four days) in the prologue by a coup with a surprising 950 m long intermediate sprint on an elevation, celebrated a stage victory on July 5 in Vitré and for two days wear the green jersey of the best sprinter. On August 11, 2000 , Wüst fell in Issoire ( France ) as a result of a collision with the Frenchman Jean-Michel Thilloy at a speed of 60 km / h, where he sustained serious head injuries. Wüst had to end his career because of the lost right eyesight .
Marcel Wüst is also not free from doping allegations . In 1998 he was a member of the Festina racing team , which caused a very large doping scandal at the 1998 Tour de France . However, Wüst had not been nominated for this Tour de France by his team. Furthermore, his name appears in the book Doped by Willy Voet , the masseur of the Festina team at that time, on a doping plan for EPO doping . However, Wüst himself denies having ever done doping and cites as evidence, among other things, that he had to end large tours several times due to lack of strength.
Professional
Wüst worked from 2001 as an expert at ARD , which broke off its live broadcasts during the 2007 tour after it became aware of several doping cases. Despite the current contract, Wüst was no longer used as an expert for reporting on the 2007 tour.
Until the dissolution of Team Coast in May 2003, he was responsible for media and communication. Then Marcel Wüst worked as press spokesman for the Wiesenhof-Akud team . He became known to the general public as a cycling expert on ARD and as the author of the book Sprinterjahre . On Mallorca , Wüst offers workshops and courses, cycling seminars and training camps for all ability groups in his house, Casa Ciclista . Marcel Wüst also works as a consultant for commercial enterprises and a moderator.
In March 2017, Marcel Wüst was elected as Vice President Marketing and Communication in the Presidium of the Association of German Cyclists . In November 2018, he resigned from this office: He underestimated the time required and could not reconcile the office with his professional duties.
