The Tour DuPont is a former cycling race in the United States , which took place six times between 1991 and 1996. The stage race was originally intended to be a similarly large and prestigious cycling event for North America as the Tour de France in France. The tour name can be derived from the sponsor DuPont . The race took place in different locations in the Mid-Atlantic States, mostly near DuPont's headquarters in Delaware . The forerunner event of the Tour DuPont in 1989 and 1990 was the Tour de Trump sponsored by Donald Trump .
Prominent racing drivers such as Lance Armstrong and Greg LeMond were able to win the race, and top-class European cycling teams also completed it. After the sixth race in 1996, the sponsor DuPont stopped its financial support and the tour has not taken place since then.
Like last year, the prologue winner was able to take the overall victory.
The team-mate of winner Greg LeMond, Atle Kvålsvoll finished second overall, just like last year.
1993
Jelle Nijdam won the prologue in a new record time, his teammate Raúl Alcalá secured overall victory by winning the 59 km time trial. Lance Armstrong was runner-up overall .
