Josef Wagner (cyclist)

Josef Wagner (born April 23, 1916 in Zurich ; † September 25, 2003 in Bad Ragaz ) was a Swiss cyclist .

Josef Wagner began his professional career in 1939 after becoming vice world champion in the amateur street race in 1938 . In 1941 he celebrated his greatest success when he won the Tour de Suisse in front of his compatriot Werner Buchwalder. In 1943 he won several Swiss one-day races . Because of the Second World War , only a few races took place during this time, and if only in Switzerland. In 1944 and 1945 he narrowly missed the Swiss road racing championship twice and finished second on both occasions. In 1946 he was able to win a stage in the Tour de Suisse and was second in the overall standings behind Gino Bartali . In the following year he ended his career. In 2003 Wagner died at the age of 87.
