Manfred Horvath (cyclist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manfred Horvath (* 1960 in Sollenau ; † after 1979) was an Austrian cyclist .

In June 1978 Horvath had taken part in the World Junior Road Championships in Washington , but ended up in a back place. In 1979 Manfred Horvath became Austrian state champion in road racing. The race took place under bad weather conditions: storm, rain and hail. Out of 97 starters only 21 crossed the finish line; many established drivers had given up. The victory of Horvath, who crossed the finish line together with a breakaway group of young riders, was considered a big surprise. Horvath was only 19 years old at the time of the victory. In the following years he could not confirm this performance in further races.

A few years after winning the Austrian championships, Horvath died of a heart attack.
