Career
Gianluca Brambilla won the Italian one-day race Gran Premio Palio del Recioto in 2009 and the Giro della Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia stage race in 2009 . In 2010 he then received a contract with the Professional Continental Team Colnago-CSF Inox for which he won the Gran Premio Nobili Rubinetterie in 2010. He finished the Giro d'Italia 2012 in 13th place. In 2013 he moved to ProTeam Omega Pharma-Quick-Step .
On September 8, 2014, during the 16th stage of the Vuelta a España, Gianluca Brambilla was removed from the race by the jury after a violent argument with Ivan Rowny .
2016 was Brambillas most successful season to date. He first won the Trofeo Pollenca in spring . At the Giro d'Italia , he won the eighth stage as a soloist after an attack on the last climb leading over dirt roads and thus took over the Maglia Rosa , which he was able to defend again on the time trial of the ninth stage. After finishing second at the Italian championships, he managed another stage win in a Grand Tour on the 15th section of the Vuelta a España when his attack triggered a general attack on the leading Chris Froome and Brambilla made the mountain finish against the eventual overall winner Nairo Quintana won.
