Karl Jenny

Karl Jenny (born January 11, 1819 in Vienna ; † October 9, 1893 there ) was an Austrian mechanical engineer and university professor . He was rector of the Vienna University of Technology .

Life

Karl Jenny completed a mechanical engineering degree at the Imperial and Royal Polytechnic Institute , where he was Adam von Burg's assistant from 1848 . In 1850 he was appointed full professor for mechanics and mechanical engineering at the kk Bergakademie Schemnitz , in 1852 he was appointed a real kk mountain ridge . From 1852 he taught at the Technical Academy in Lemberg .

From 1866 until his retirement in 1889 he was a full professor of technical mechanics and mechanical engineering at the Polytechnic Institute in Vienna as successor to Adam von Burg. In the academic years 1866/67 to 1874/75 he was the first dean of the mechanical engineering school, in the academic year 1875/76 he was elected rector of the Vienna University of Technology . During his rectorate a chair for architectural form was established.

Jenny made numerous trips, including visiting the major European machine factories, and he was also a juror and reporter at the world exhibitions in London (1862), Paris (1867) and Vienna (1873). Among other things, he dealt with strength tests and material tests and founded the university's technical laboratory for this purpose. He also made calculations for water wheels and flywheels and constructed double-acting steam engines with slide controls .
