Franz Pongratz
Franz Pongratz (born October 6, 1896 in Vienna ; † March 21, 1973 there ) was an Austrian civil engineer and university professor . He was rector of the Vienna University of Technology .
Life
Franz Pongratz graduated from the Technical University of Vienna with a degree in civil engineering in 1920. From 1921 to 1927 he was an extraordinary assistant at the chair for reinforced concrete and statics with Rudolf Saliger . In 1926 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the useful width of the two sides freely supported plate when subjected to loads to Dr. techn.
From 1927 to 1929 he was a civil servant at the Lower Austrian Chamber of Agriculture , for which he designed and implemented various agricultural buildings. In 1928 he passed the civil engineering examination and then went into business for himself. From 1934 to 1938 he was a member of the Federal Economic Council. In 1937 he was elected President of the Chamber of Engineers for Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland. After the “Anschluss” of Austria , Pongratz was relieved of all offices, and during the war he worked as a civil engineer and master builder.
After the Second World War, he initially worked as a supplement at the Vienna University of Technology. From 1946 until his retirement in 1965 he was a full professor for reinforced concrete and solid construction at the Vienna University of Technology. In the academic years 1951/52 and 1952/53 he was also dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering there, in 1956/57 he was elected rector of the Vienna University of Technology . From 1945 to 1951 he was Vice President and from 1951 to 1954 again President of the Chamber of Engineers for Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland.
Pongratz specialized in prestressed concrete structures . The structures he built include the Großram motorway bridge and an arched bridge over the Erlauf , as well as a reservoir on Mönchsberg in Salzburg and storage facilities at the Nordbahnhof .
During his studies he joined the Catholic fraternity Franco-Bavaria , in 1952 he voluntarily resigned from the fraternity due to a remarriage after a divorce. Pongratz was awarded the Great Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria . He died in 1973 at the age of 76 and was buried in the Mauer cemetery. In 1979 the Pongratzgasse in the 23rd district of Vienna, Liesing , was named after him.
