history
The first known cemetery in Mauer was near the parish church of Mauer and has been in use since 1686. In the course of the Josephinian reforms, the cemetery had to be moved to the outskirts, where the St. Erhard kindergarten is located today. For the barracks in Mauer there was also a military cemetery in the west of the village, which was occupied between 1785 and 1881 and was closed in 1892.
The present cemetery was consecrated on December 30, 1867. Another relocation of the cemetery had become necessary because the kk district office had refused to expand the existing cemetery for sanitary reasons. The old cemetery was finally closed in 1894. The old cemetery chapel, built in 1823, is still in the garden of today's kindergarten. The first of five extensions to the cemetery on Reiterberg took place in 1876, the last in 1961. In 1928, an urn grove was laid out, which was relocated in 1936. A new urn grove was built in 1964. The new mortuary, built between 1935 and 1936, was redesigned in 1972/1973 by the architect Erich Boltenstern , who had previously rebuilt the mortuary at the Liesing cemetery, among other things . The front wall of the urn laying room created in the process was designed by the painter Hans Robert Pippal .
At the Mauer cemetery there are some architecturally interesting mausoleums , in particular the neo-Gothic , listed oil tent mausoleum, which was built in 1876 by the architect Franz Fröhlich . Furthermore, the grave chapels of the Gottfried Alber-Justus families (built in 1901, architect Adolf Slabij ), Knips and Krassl (built around 1893/1895, architect Gerhard Reitmayer ), von Mallmann (built around 1885/1889, architect Emil Bressler ), Hermann (built around 1920), Ferdinand Salcher (built in 1889, sculptor Otto Langer ) and Katlein (built in 1932). The mausoleum of the Knips family, facing east, is intended for 18 coffins.
There is also a Saxon grave with members of the army of the Kingdom of Saxony , who came to the Vienna area after the defeat at Königgrätz . In its current form it was built in 1892 by the Imperial and Royal Ministry of War.
