The Mauer parish church is a Roman Catholic church in the Mauer district in Liesing, Vienna's 23rd  district . It is consecrated to St. Erhard .

history

Wall initially asked no own parish is. Its Catholic population belonged to the parish of neighboring Atzgersdorf . It was not until 1783 that Mauer was raised to its own parish.

The Gothic church building was built in the middle of the 15th century and was first mentioned in 1458 as Sand Erhartscapelle in der Maur . The church is a foundation of the Eckartsauer, the then Lords of Mauer. The Eckart Auer, headquartered in Eckartsau in Lower Austria were the Bishopric of Regensburg loan fee . This explains the choice of St. Erhard von Regensburg as church patron. The building was designed as a fortified church from the start . However, it is likely that the Mauer parish church suffered severe damage during the first and second Turkish sieges of Vienna .

In the interwar period , the church with its east-west orientation formed a traffic obstacle for the newly built tram . From 1934 to 1936, the architect Clemens Holzmeister made major structural changes. The entire nave was removed and the church was given a north-south orientation. The Gothic choir , which has been rededicated as a side chapel, and the medieval church tower with its tower dome from 1770 remain of the old building .

The Wotruba Church , also known as the Rector's Church on the Georgenberg , consecrated to the Holy Trinity in 1976 , belongs to the Mauer parish.

Artistic arrangement

Interior of the church (old part)

The baroque Pietà is the work of Giovanni Giuliani and a foundation by Gerhard Weixelberger , abbot of the Heiligenkreuz Abbey , whose father was the local judge of Mauer. The high altar painting Adoration of the Holy Trinity by Saint Erhard , probably made after 1751, is attributed to Troger's pupil Franz Zoller . Another Troger student, Franz Xaver Wagenschön , has paintings of the church fathers and evangelists in the church.

The glass windows and mosaics from the 1930s were designed by Albert Paris Gütersloh . A mosaic depicting the Way of the Cross was made by Rudolf Hermann Eisenmenger .
