Rudolf Hermann Eisenmenger (born August 7, 1902 in Piskitelep in Transylvania , Hungary (today Simeria , Romania ); † November 3, 1994 in Vienna ) was an Austrian painter .

life and work

Rudolf Hermann Eisenmenger, the son of the doctor Rudolf Eisenmenger , moved to Vienna with his parents in 1921 and began studying at the Vienna Academy with Hans Tichy and Rudolf Bacher . During his studies he joined the Vienna Academic Burschenschaft Silesia in 1921 .

In 1930 he became the youngest member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus , had the first exhibition in 1930 and in 1932 the breakthrough with 32 exhibited works. Eisenmenger's own style is characterized by the traditional, classic and romantic element. In 1936 he represented Austria for the Olympic Games in Berlin and received the silver medal in the Olympic art competition for the painting "Runner before the goal" . He also received the Austrian Cross of Merit for Art and Science, 1st Class and the City of Vienna Prize. Successful exhibitions in the USA, Berlin and Poland followed. In 1937 he was an Austrian juror and exhibitor at the House of German Art in Munich. In 1938 he again took part in the Venice Biennale and received the City of Vienna Prize. Adolf Hitler , a great admirer of Eisenmenger's art, who was a National Socialist - NSDAP member since 1933 - bought many of his works shown in the Great German Art Exhibition , including the painting "The Night Accompanies the Morning" , which was owned by the Prussian Castle Foundation for many years was and now belongs to the Berlin German Historical Museum . In 1943 he took part in the exhibition Young Art in the German Reich in Vienna organized by Reichsleiter Baldur von Schirach with two works . At the exhibition German Artists and the SS in Breslau in 1944 , he exhibited the tapestry home: "The strength of all of us does not lie in an international phantom - it lies in our home" .

After the war he continued to work in Vienna and received numerous commissions and awards. In 1950 he created the web templates for the tapestry in the Gustav Mahler Hall of the Vienna State Opera . It was there in 1955 that he designed the Iron Curtain with the main theme of the opera Orpheus and Eurydice by Christoph Willibald Gluck .

Rudolf Eisenmenger was buried in the Kalksburg cemetery .
