Young art in the German Empire

The exhibition Young Art in the German Empire was carried out on behalf of Reich Governor and Reich Leader Baldur von Schirach in 1943 in the Vienna Künstlerhaus . Schirach's general cultural advisor, Walter Thomas in Vienna, commissioned Wilhelm Rüdiger from Munich to put the exhibition together. 582 works by 175 artists were shown.

As early as the summer of 1942, Wilhelm Rüdiger organized an exhibition of contemporary art under the title “Young Creation” on the occasion of a German-Italian youth meeting in Weimar. Schirach was enthusiastic about this exhibition and ordered the exhibition to be handed over to Vienna. In Vienna the exhibition was expanded to include a number of Austrian artists.

Although the title said it was about “young art”, many artists were already quite old. Karl Albiker , for example, was already 65 years old. In the Völkischer Beobachter Heinrich Neumayer wrote: "When we talk about young German art, we are talking about refined wine, not fermentation processes, storm or must we experience in the art shown here" . “Young” should be interpreted in the context of “old” art in the House of German Art . With the exhibition Young Art in the German Empire , Schirach made a careful attempt to re-establish Vienna's importance as a cultural center.

At the same time as the exhibition Young Art in the German Reich , a Klimt exhibition took place in the exhibition building on Friedrichsstrasse, also at the suggestion of Schirach . This exhibition attracted visitors: it counted 24,096 admissions, and the duration of the exhibition was extended by a week, while the exhibition Young Art in the German Empire only reached 9,084 visitors.

At the same time, works by Käthe Kollwitz and Egon Schiele were on view in the Albertina . All these exhibitions together amounted to a protest against the official policy of the Berlin Reich Chamber of Culture and the Munich House of German Art. In addition, the exhibition Young Art in the German Reich also presented artists whose works had previously been confiscated in German museums, including Josef Hegenbarth , Josef Henselmann , Hanna Nagel , Carl Moritz Schreiner , Milly Steger and Friedrich Vordemberge .

Adolf Ziegler described the exhibition in a report as a representation of a “moderate form of decay art”. Joseph Goebbels sent Karl Kolb , director of the German House of Art, and Benno von Arent , Reich stage designer, to Vienna for an inspection. Their verdict was: A single “liberal mess”. The exhibition, planned from February 7th to March 28th, aroused the displeasure of Joseph Goebbels and Adolf Hitler . According to Schirach's memoirs, Baldur von Schirach was quoted as the person in charge before Adolf Hitler: He pointed to a picture in the exhibition catalog and said “Look at this picture - a green dog!” (Work by Josef Hegenbarth). The exhibition was closed prematurely on March 7, 1943, allegedly due to overloading of the Reichsbahn, as the Viennese press reported.

Along with the “ 30 German Artists ” exhibition organized by the National Socialist German Student Union in Berlin in 1933, it was one of the few official Nazi exhibitions that was closed due to “alleged suspicion of art degeneration ”. The exhibition was a provocation that was not intended as a resistance against the Nazi regime itself. Schirach wanted to try to break out of the “sterility of official exhibitions” in order to reopen the expressionism debate that was fierce in Germany in 1933/34 . It was also an action against his internal party enemies, Goebbels and Alfred Rosenberg .

This exhibition did a lot of damage to the participating artists. Only two years later these artists were seen as so-called followers and favorites.
