Josef Weisz

Josef Weisz (born August 27, 1894 in Munich , † 1969 in Planegg ) was a wood cutter and book illustrator .

Life

Josef Weisz was born in Munich in 1894 as the son of master tailor Josef Weiss. In 1909 he began an apprenticeship as a goldsmith . Under pressure from his father, he becomes an apprentice tailor. From 1913 to 1916 Weisz was a student of Fritz Helmuth Ehmcke at the Munich School of Applied Arts in the writing and book trade.

From 1916 to 1918 Weisz did front-line service in the First World War . The war sketchbook was also created here , an art folder with 195 drawings of landscapes and people in Russia, France and Belgium. The Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin and the Deutsche Bücherei in Leipzig exhibited his expressionist works as early as the 1920s . Weisz's work was increasingly in demand for illustration of books. He created 35 lithographs for Goethe's Faust. In 1932 the Klingspor brothers reprinted Goethe's “Metamorphosis of Plants” in Offenbach, and Josef Weisz created twelve woodcuts as an appendix.

During his life, Weisz was mainly concerned with depicting plants. In his 1950s he also devoted himself to the animal world. Illustrations were created for the books “Small Aquarium” (1950), “Flowers and Animals” (1951) and “Heiteres Tierbuch” (1952), which was recognized as one of the most beautiful books of 1952.
