He made his debut at the Great Art Exhibition in Stuttgart in 1913 with a bust of his father that was bought by the state. Shortly before the end of his studies, he was commissioned by Franz von Stuck in 1914 to model the large fighting amazon (also riding amazon ) von Stucks based on a 1:10 model. A copy of it is still standing in front of the Villa Stuck in Munich and Eberswalde.

In 1929 Knecht was awarded the title of professor and in 1934 the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich made him an honorary member. In 1937 the Prussian Academy of the Arts in Berlin accepted him as a full member. 1933 and 1937 to 1939, he was together with Hermann Kaspar of the NSDAP Gau Munich with the design of the parades on the Day of German Art commissioned the 1937 under the motto German Two thousand years of culture is emphasized. One of his best-known students is Marlene Neubauer-Woerner , who moved from Josef Henselmann to Richard Knecht in 1942 and was his master student until 1945.
