Life

Steinhart came from a middle-class Salzburg family. As a child he attended the private painting school of the Salzburg landscape painter Franz Hinterholzer at his own request . Steinhart travels to England and Italy and studies in Munich and Paris. From 1915 to 1918 he took part in the First World War.

Steinhart lived in Salzburg from 1918. His sister Betty Platter ran the renowned Salzburg business Photo Ellinger , which has documented the Salzburg Festival since it was founded in 1920. Steinhart also worked regularly as a photographer at Photo Ellinger to make a living. This also resulted in numerous sketches and reed pen drawings of performances at the festival, which he published in a portfolio with Friedrich Welz in 1960 .

In addition to the many reed pen drawings, he also created oil paintings , the subjects of which were mostly landscapes . Steinhart made numerous pictures during his months in Italy. Steinhart was close friends with Anton Faistauer, who was almost the same age, as well as with the draftsman Alfred Kubin , the painter Anton Kolig and the Art Nouveau painter Carl Moll .

Most of Steinhart's paintings are in the Salzburg Museum , the former Salzburg Museum Carolino Augusteum , the Museum der Moderne Salzburg , the former Rupertinum and the Albertina, and are privately owned.
