Franz Hinterholzer (born December 15, 1851 in Salzburg , † October 22, 1928 there ) was an Austrian landscape painter .

life and work

Despite a chronic eye condition, Hinterholzer decided to study painting and from November 27, 1868 attended the class of antiquities at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . After completing his studies, Hinterholzer traveled to Northern Germany, Italy and France, among others.

Back in Salzburg, Hinterholzer founded a private painting school in 1886 . His students included, for example, Anton Steinhart , Michael Ruppe and Franz Kuhlstrunk . He showed his works in the Munich Glass Palace and in the Vienna Künstlerhaus .

In 1895 the painter married Maria Rotter and moved his studio from the Salzburg Künstlerhaus to his private apartment at 38 Müllner Hauptstrasse.

Hinterholzer worked for the Munich magazine Fliegende Blätter and, together with his friend Franz Xaver von Pausinger, illustrated the Salzburg volume of a work on the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. In numerous articles, Hinterholzer criticized the ongoing destruction of the area surrounding the city of Salzburg.

In 1905, Hinterholzer was awarded the title of civil cavalier as court painter and drawing teacher for the grand ducal family of Habsburg-Tuscany .

In 1913 his eye disease spread to the previously healthy right eye. After the First World War , the blind artist remained penniless and lived on a grace pension.

Honors

In the city of Salzburg, the Franz-Hinterholzer-Kai was named after the painter.
