Ferdinand Lammeyer: Departure , Lessing-Gymnasium, Frankfurt am Main

Ferdinand Lammeyer (born December 12, 1899 in Fulda ; † August 27, 1995 in Bischofsheim an der Rhön ) was a German painter . From 1959 to 1965 he was rector of the State University of Fine Arts (Städelschule) in Frankfurt am Main .

Live and act

Lammeyer studied from 1921 to 1925 at the Städelschule, among others with the landscape painter Andreas Egersdörfer (1866-1946). In 1925 he opened his own studio in Frankfurt, and in 1928 he became a member of the Darmstadt Secession . In 1932 Lammeyer went to Berlin to study wall painting with Kurt Wehlte . In 1943 he was involved in the exhibition Young Art in the German Empire in the Vienna Künstlerhaus with seven works. Lammeyer worked as a painter in Frankfurt until his studio and apartment were destroyed in 1944. His pictures, drawings and sketches were almost completely destroyed in the bombing. He moved to Bischofsheim an der Rhön as a freelance artist, a residence that he kept until his death.

In 1950 the professorship for free painting at the Städelschule had to be filled. Originally, Max Beckmann , who was expelled from school by the National Socialists in 1933 and who had already accepted, but died shortly before the appointment in New York City , was originally intended for this position . The professor Franz Karl Delavilla then urged the staff to appoint the painter Lammeyer, who was known to him, but completely unknown internationally, as professor and head of the class for free painting. From 1953 to 1959 Lammeyer was chairman of the Frankfurter Sezession artists' association and from 1959 to 1965 rector of the Städelschule. In 1965 he retired and returned to Bischofsheim.

In 1967 Lammeyer designed the ceramic relief Aufbruch for the new building of the Lessing-Gymnasium in Frankfurt . The hand-made and glazed tiles from clay occupy an area of 13 × 10 m next to the staircase leading to the main portal and represent three walking figures.
