Peter Jakob Schober (born December 13, 1897 in Gschwend , † July 22, 1983 in Bad Bleiberg ) was a German painter of expressive realism .

Life

He was the youngest of his parents 'eleven children and from 1911 attended the teachers' college in Backnang , after which he was a trainee lawyer at various elementary schools. He took part in the First World War from 1916 to 1918 and was seriously wounded on the Western Front. From 1919 to 1922 he was a drawing and gymnastics teacher in Calw , then he completed art studies at the Stuttgart Academy until 1929 , with Christian Landenberger , Heinrich Altherr and Alexander Eckener , among others . While he was still a student, Schober took part in exhibitions at the Stuttgart Secession . From 1929 to 1932 he stayed in Paris , where he came into contact with Impressionism and Cézanne . In 1931 he came back to Stuttgart, where he married his wife Berta. In 1932 he received a teaching position for etchings at the Stuttgart Academy, from 1937 he was a freelance artist.

From 1939 Schober did military service. He was a reporter in the fighting areas in the east, u. a. together with Fritz Nuss . In 1943, his studio in Stuttgart, along with almost the entire factory, was destroyed by the effects of the war. His family then moved to rural Billensbach , where Alfred Lörcher had previously moved and where his friend Rudolf Yelin also lived in neighboring Etzlenswend . Schober himself became a prisoner of war towards the end of the war, where he met Otto Dix in a camp in Colmar . In 1946 Schober returned home from captivity and planned a studio house in Billensbach, which the family moved into in 1949.

From the early 1950s onwards, Schober received numerous commissions for art in architecture . In addition to these applied works, a free work was created, which soon gained its impressions from extensive trips to Spain, France, Italy and North Africa. Schober was chairman of the Stuttgart Secession from 1954 to 1968. In addition, from 1950 he was a member of the Heilbronn Artists' Association , of which he was made an honorary member in 1972. In 1967 he received the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class, and in 1973 he was appointed professor. He died in 1983 while on vacation in Bad Bleiberg (Carinthia).
