The Mörikeschule Backnang has been a community school in the primary level (grades 1 to 4) and secondary level (grade 5 in the first year) since the 2013/2014 school year. It is located in Backnang in Baden-Württemberg . By the school year 2018/2019, all grades will belong to the community school. Until then, the secondary school classes will be continued according to the Werkrealschule model, but will therefore expire. The school building of the Mörikeschule was built from 1907 to 1909 for the Backnang teacher training college based on designs by Albert von Beger . From 1934 to 1945, the National Political Education Institute Backnang was located here.

Building history and architecture

Albert von Beger (1855–1921) was an architect in the civil service as Stuttgart's senior building officer. He designed numerous public buildings in Württemberg , mainly schools and administrative buildings, etc. a. the justice building in Tübingen. The building for the teachers' college was built between 1907 and 1909 and inaugurated on May 25, 1909. The city of Backnang had assigned the building site with a size of 25,000 m² free of charge. The construction costs were 775,000 marks , at today's prices around 4,568,000 euros.

Three larger buildings were grouped around a gymnasium and playground, containing classrooms, boarding school and utility rooms. A preparatory facility was planned on the east side of the schoolyard, but it was never carried out.

Usage history

From 1909 to 1934 the teachers' seminar with boarding school used the building as intended. In 1934 one of the first national political educational institutions (Napola) was established here. After the end of the war, the building served briefly as a military hospital for the US Army , then from 1946 as provisional accommodation for displaced persons , mostly Jewish citizens. In 1952 a four-class elementary school was established in the building. In 1959 the city of Backnang bought the building; since 1961 the primary and secondary school has been named after Eduard Mörike Mörikeschule . The local commercial vocational schools also used the building from 1963 to 1974.
