Alexander "Alex" Eckener (born August 21, 1870 in Flensburg ; † May 26, 1944 in Aalen ) was a German painter and graphic artist.

Alexander Eckener was the younger son of the cigar manufacturer Johann Christoph Eckener (1824–1880) and his wife, the shoemaker's daughter Anna Maria Elisabeth Lange (1832–1893); the zeppelin driver Hugo Eckener was his older brother.

Eckener received his first artistic suggestions from his teacher, the Flensburg painter Jacob Nöbbe . With his support, Eckener was able to study with Johann Herterich at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich between 1888 and 1892 . He then returned to his hometown and joined the Ekensund artists' colony there . Since 1897 participation in exhibitions in Berlin, Munich, Flensburg, Stuttgart. Member of the Schleswig-Holstein Art Cooperative since 1899.

At the age of 29, Eckener went to Stuttgart in 1899 on the recommendation of Hans Peter Feddersen and was accepted as a master student of Leopold Graf von Kalckreuth at the art academy there . This introduced him to the art of etching and it was in this genre that Eckener achieved his artistic breakthrough. 1900 Scholarship from the Württemberg Ministry of Culture to Paris. Although he had been based in Stuttgart since 1899, the Flensburg Fjord and the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein remained his preferred study locations. 1905 Foundation of a private eraser school in Stuttgart. Since 1908 teacher in the graphics class at the Stuttgart Art Academy, in 1912 he advanced to associate professor there ; In 1925 he was entrusted with the management of the academy as full professor for lithography and woodcut . Eckener resigned this office in 1928, but taught until his retirement in 1936. Etching remained his strongest and most subtle artistic medium, the highlight of which are the illustrations for Theodor Storm's novella "Der Schimmelreiter."

Alexander Eckener was married to the painter Sophie Dorothea (née Eisenlohr) (1884–1975) since 1905 , their son was the painter Hans-Peter Eckener (1910–1944).
