Stuttgart Secession

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Stuttgart Secession (also spelled Secession) was a German artist group of painters and sculptors that split off from the Künstlerbund Stuttgart in the spring of 1923 due to its outdated management style and conservative art policy. The design of the exhibitions was the main point of contention that led to this split, the name of which was based on earlier splits (= secions ) of groups of artists.

history

Founding members of the Secession were the academy teachers Heinrich Altherr and Arnold Waldschmidt , the arts and crafts school teachers Alfred Lörcher and Bernhard Pankok and the free artists Reinhold Nägele and Jakob Wilhelm Fehrle . Heinrich Altherr was the first chairman from 1923 to 1928. His personality shaped and dominated the Stuttgart Secession spiritually.

In 1933, the artists' association was practically dissolved in the course of the National Socialist conformity . Formally, however, it still existed until the beginning of 1937. The final end came at the end of 1937 when the National Socialists purged the State Picture Gallery in Stuttgart , during which numerous works by members and exhibition participants were removed and destroyed.

In 1947 the "Stuttgart Secession" was re-established and existed until 1967 without any exhibition facilities of its own.
