Hans Gottfried von Stockhausen (born May 12, 1920 at Trendelburg ; † January 8, 2010 in Remshalden -Buoch) was a German glass painter , painter and draftsman . He was best known for his more than 500 church windows and architecture-related works at home and abroad.

Life

Hans Gottfried von Stockhausen came from a widely ramified noble family . After his participation in World War II , u. a. During the battle for Stalingrad , and during British imprisonment in a camp in Egypt , Stockhausen studied glass painting and mosaic with Rudolf Yelin at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart from 1947 to 1952 .

As an artist, he initially devoted himself to architecture-related glass painting and was entrusted with commissions primarily from the church sector. In 1968 he became head of a class for general artistic training at the same academy. On October 1, 1971, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Culture appointed him to the chair of glass painting and mosaic previously held by Rudolf Yelin at the suggestion of the Academy Council . For several years he worked as the university's prorector.

The contribution that Stockhausen made to contemporary glass painting as an artist and academic teacher has been noticed with attention beyond Germany since the late 1970s. He put the free glass picture he developed from 1964 at the center of his university teaching, which he first gave an account of in the summer of 1974 with an exhibition at the academy. Ten students took part in the exhibition, which "revealed the change in perception and training intentions that has recently taken place" ( Wolfgang Kermer ). The colored glass became the topic, not only as a given material, but in the process of being transformed into a meditative background. Stockhausen never abandoned or denied figurative representation or representationalism. His drawings, etchings, woodcuts and pastels show it. In terms of content, his pictures often incorporate biblical stories and motifs from ancient mythology. His pictures want to translate important content into a generally understandable language.

He not only revived old manual techniques for processing flat glass, but also developed new, previously unusual techniques for glass pictures. With the installation of a studio glass oven towards the end of his activity at the Stuttgart Academy, a long-cherished wish came true. Under his influence, “ Stuttgarter Glas ” has become an internationally recognized term. After his retirement in 1986, he took on teaching positions at the Pilchuck Glass School in Pilchuck / Washington (USA) in 1986 and 1990 , and in 1987 a teaching position in Edinburgh / Scotland .

Von Stockhausen maintained his studio at Waldenburg Castle , where he often showed exhibitions of his works to the public.

Hans Gottfried von Stockhausen had a son and a daughter in his first marriage with the painter Margarethe Lahusen, and in his second marriage with the painter Ada Isensee two sons.
