Town hall on the market square Schorndorf

The baroque town hall of Schorndorf is a landmark of the city and an eye-catcher on the historic market square, which forms the center of the city. It was built from 1726 to 1730 under the direction of Georg Friedrich Majer .

location

The town hall is located on the lower part of the historic upper market square; it forms, so to speak, the boundary between the upper and lower market places. The portal faces south, in the direction of the upper market square. The house of Barbara Künkelin and the Palmsche pharmacy are in the immediate vicinity .

history

The previous building of today's town hall , which presumably dates from 1489, was destroyed during the great conflagration of 1634, like almost the entire city. In addition to its function as town hall, it also served as a grain store and department store and was probably located in the same place where the town hall stands today.

However, a new town hall was not built immediately; As an interim solution, a building from Urbach served initially from 1640 , which was moved to Schorndorf and also served as a granary.

In 1726 the construction of a new town hall was planned according to the plans of Georg Friedrich Majer . He was also involved in the construction of the Ludwigsburg Palace and was inspired by this building for the Schorndorf Town Hall. This can be seen on the ornate portal. The foundation stone was laid on September 9, 1727; on June 26th 1730 the new town hall was inaugurated. On September 22nd, 1769, the court room of the town hall was painted with Old Testament and ancient motifs. The painted wood paneling was removed in 1937 and later brought to the local history museum (today: city museum). Until its renovation in 1978, the ground floor was a two-aisled, high wooden pillar hall, in which, among other things, a market hall was located. On the second floor were council chambers and a council and citizens' hall. The foyer and city information are now on the ground floor.

particularities

Portal of the town hall

The Schorndorf town hall, built in baroque style, is the highlight of the market square. The representative main portal is located between two round arches and is framed by two dorising columns . There is a balcony with a baluster above the entrance . The city arms are also shown; the inscription "AEDES DEO SACRA - CURIA SCHORNDORFINA POST NOVEM DECEN__IA DUOSVE AN__OS E CINERIBUS RESTITUTA - ANNO - MDCCXXVI", translated: "This house is consecrated to God - the Schorndorf town hall after nine decades and two years rose from the ashes" in 1726 " Engraved above the portal.

In the north on the hipped roof of the building there is a small wooden belfry, in the south, i. H. above the front of the town hall, an octagonal bell tower.

On the back there is a mosaic by Hans Gottfried von Stockhausen from 1965, which depicts the Schorndorfer women . Before that, murals from 1888 and 1938 showed the women of Schorndorf. In front of the mosaic is the Gottlieb Daimler monument , which commemorates the city's most famous son.
