The Palm'sche Apotheke is a half-timbered building in Schorndorf, around 30 km east of Stuttgart , and is one of the best-known half-timbered buildings in southern Germany.

location

The building is located on the historic market square in Schorndorf, in the center of the city, which is also considered one of the most beautiful in southern Germany. It limits this on the eastern side. The Gauppsche Apotheke is directly opposite to the south and the town hall to the north . Barbara Künkelin's long-term home is connected to the Palm'sche Apotheke on the north side. Behind the pharmacy building runs a narrow lane called the Apothekergässchen.

history

detail

The Palm'sche Apotheke was rebuilt around 1660 from ruins or on the foundation walls of the two previous buildings. These were destroyed in the course of the city bombing by imperial troops in 1634, during the Thirty Years War , as was most of the city except for individual parts, such as the choir of the city church . In 1644, the pharmacist Johann Philipp Palm initially only bought one of the two houses, namely the right corner house, later also the “rear dwelling”, i.e. the second building that was connected to the first. The pharmacy has been in the first building since 1644; after Palm bought the second house, it was expanded and initially consisted of two houses. The reconstruction of the corner house was probably completed a few years earlier than that of the second building. There are also opinions that assume the left, rear building is older. The two corner posts of this semi-detached house meet above the main entrance; In 1696, the buildings were merged into one by building the overarching dwelling .

Around 1800 the pharmacy was plastered, with some details, e.g. B. Profiles and Consoles , were lost. In 1896 the facade was painted ornamentally . In 1931 the framework was exposed again after the architect and local researcher Immanuel Carl Rösler discovered the artificial framework under the plaster.

In the years 1976 to 1979 the house was demolished due to new pharmacy regulations and structural misjudgments; The walls were cut out over a large area and were later to be added or hung in the new building. The new pharmacy building was opened on September 13, 1979. The half-timbered structure was restored during the reconstruction and used as a facade. The pharmacy is still located on the lower floor, while various medical practices are set up on the upper floors.

Memorial plaques for Johann Philipp Palm on the southern front
saying Geroks

On the west and south sides there are various panels that remind of the bookseller Johann Philipp Palm from Nuremberg , who was born in Schorndorf. He was shot in Braunau am Inn in 1806 on the orders of Napoleon after he had published an anti-Napoleonic manifesto .

On the left edge of the western side, above the entrance, which today leads to the doctor's office, among other things, is the saying:

"Seeking the true,
loving the beautiful,
practicing the good."

This comes from the poet and theologian Karl von Gerok from Vaihingen an der Enz .
