The Evangelical Lutheran Maria Magdalenen Church in Kiel-Elmschenhagen was first built in the 13th century. On July 22nd, 1227 a coalition army under Adolf IV. Von Schauenburg and Holstein defeated the Danish King Waldemar II. July 22nd became the church's namesake as a day of remembrance for Maria Magdalena.

In the 19th century the church was badly damaged by lightning. In 1865, the design of the Kiel city architect Martens for a new building was approved, the building was completed in 1866, on December 19 the building with the 56 meter high tower was consecrated. The church in Elmschenhagen is one of the first churches in Schleswig-Holstein to be built in the neo-Gothic style . The construction costs amounted to 85,716 marks . Two years after the inauguration, the church received an organ.

The chancel and the organ prospect were destroyed by aerial bombs in the Second World War, and in 1949 the church received a used organ again. The chancel shows biblical stories in the window paintings by the glass artist Hans Gottfried von Stockhausen .
