Werkel is a district of the cathedral city of Fritzlar in the Schwalm-Eder district in northern Hesse .

The district with its rural structure is conveniently located on the A 49 . The Volkswagen plant in Baunatal and other larger employers in nearby Kassel offer corresponding jobs. Today Werkel has around 800 inhabitants, many of whom are still active in agriculture, which is very productive due to the fertile soils of the Fritzlarer Börde .

history

In 1219 the place was first mentioned as Werkele . In 1424 the place was completely destroyed during a military conflict between the Archdiocese of Mainz and the Landgraviate of Hesse . In 1595 the place was mapped in Gerhard Mercator's atlas on the sheet "Hassia landtgraviatus".

Towards the end of World War II , on Holy Saturday , March 31, 1945 Werkel was destroyed by American troops to more than 70 percent by artillery fire, when German troops deposed from Fritzlar and Werkel, along with seven tanks of the type Tiger II consisting of 3rd Company of Heavy Panzer Division 501, who had come to Kassel, again offered resistance.

On December 31, 1971, the previously independent municipality of Werkel was incorporated into the city of Fritzlar.
