Dietrich Henschler

Dietrich Henschler (born November 19, 1924 in Glösa ; † April 4, 2014 in Würzburg ) was a German physician and toxicologist . For many years he was head of the MAK Commission of the German Research Foundation (DFG).

life and work

Henschler studied medicine at the University of Würzburg , where he received his doctorate in 1953 . At the Pharmacological Institute in Würzburg he completed his habilitation in 1957 under Wilhelm Neumann on structure-activity relationships and the mechanisms of action of neurotoxic tricresyl phosphates . The University of Würzburg appointed him Extraordinary Professor in 1964, and in 1965 he was appointed to the newly established Chair of Toxicology and Pharmacology, which he held until 1994.

Dietrich Henschler was a member from 1961 and from 1969 to 1992 chairman of the Senate Commission for the testing of harmful substances of the DFG, which set the maximum workplace concentration (MAK value) for chemicals. With Wolfgang Forth and Walter Rummel he was the founding editor of the “Textbook of General and Special Pharmacology and Toxicology” known as “Forth”, which is now in its 10th edition. He has published numerous monographs on harmful substances and has been a member of the protection commission of the Federal Minister of the Interior for many years .

In 1975 he was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit.

Dietrich Henschler died on April 4, 2014.
