The White Nose Saki ( Chiropotes albinasus ) is a species of primate from the group of the New World monkeys (Platyrrhini).

features

White-nosed sakis are medium-sized primates with dark fur . They reach a head body length of 38 to 42 centimeters, the very bushy tail is as long as the body. Their weight is around 2 to 3 kilograms, with the males being slightly heavier than the females. In adult animals, the head is provided with a mop of hair and a beard on the throat. The flesh-colored nose and upper lip, which stand out clearly from the dark face, are striking. This area is provided with sparse white fur, which is hardly visible in living animals, but is clearly visible in museum fur. Since the species was described using a museum skin , it bears its current German and scientific ( albinasus ) name.

distribution and habitat

The distribution areas of the five species of Bartsaki:
red - white-nosed saki ,
violet - red-backed kaki ,
light blue - guiana-red-backed kaki ,
yellow - satan monkey ,
green - uta-hick-saki .

White-nosed sakis are only found in Brazil . Their range is limited in the north by the Amazon , in the west by the Rio Madeira and in the east by the Rio Xingu . Their habitat are tropical rainforests .

Way of life

White-nosed sakis are diurnal tree dwellers. They often stay in the upper layer of the crown, where they usually move on all fours. They live in groups of 18 to 30 animals made up of several males and females. They often split up into smaller subgroups to forage and get back together for sleep.

The diet of these animals consists mainly of hard-shelled fruits and seeds. They consume flowers and insects to a small extent.

After a gestation period of around five months, the female usually gives birth to a single young. This is weaned after several months and reaches sexual maturity at around four years of age.

Danger

The main threat to the White Nose Saki is the destruction of their habitat as the forests are cleared and converted into agricultural areas. Hunting plays a lesser role because of their meat and fur. The IUCN is concerned that the overall population in the next 30 years will decrease by 50% and classifies the type it as "high risk" ( endangered ) a.

The species is no longer kept in Europe, former owners are Frankfurt, Halle, Cologne, Leipzig, Vienna and London.
