Leo von Welden (born December 16, 1899 in Paris , † July 30, 1967 in Feilnbach ) was a German painter and graphic artist. His work can be assigned to expressive realism .
Life
Leo von Welden entered the private Parisian art academy Académie Julian at the age of twelve . In 1915 he moved to Munich and fought as a soldier in the First World War from 1917 to 1918 . In 1919 he attended Heinrich Knirr's painting school in Munich and then studied from 1920 to 1925 at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts with Angelo Jank , Peter Halm and Adolf Schinnerer, among others .
Until 1943 he lived as a painter and graphic artist in Munich. Illustrations appear in the magazine Jugend .
During the time of National Socialism, Welden created not only his naturalistic pictures but also paintings that glorified parties and war. He was represented with several works in the representative Great German Art Exhibition : March 9th (1938), return of the Wolhynien Germans (1940), raiding troops across the river (1941), advance in Norway (1941), Reich Labor Service in the East (1942 ). Much of his work was destroyed in a bomb attack on his studio in 1943. 1944–1945 he did military service until 1945 when he was taken prisoner by the Americans for two months.
From 1946 Leo von Welden first worked in Bad Aibling , where he was a founding member of the art association , and from 1952 until his death in Feilnbach . There he became the focus of a large artistic circle of friends and showed his works in numerous exhibitions. In this creative phase, burlesque, fantastic and Christian motifs dominate his work. In 1957 he created the Stations of the Cross for the Feilnbach parish church.
