Life

Sculpture “Teachers and Students” by Kurt Schwippert in Hagen

The four years younger brother of the architect Hans Schwippert studied from 1921 to 1927 at the Werkkunstschule in Essen and the art academies in Stuttgart and Düsseldorf with a focus on sculptures made of stone, wood and clay.

He then worked as a freelance sculptor in Düsseldorf and (since 1930) in his studio in Hünerbach in the Eifel. During the National Socialist era, one of his works in Duisburg museum property was confiscated as "degenerate", and its memorials in Brüggen (Lower Rhine) and the Duisburg forest cemetery were removed. At the same time he received a state grant from the Prussian Ministry of Culture and even state commissions, for example for 75 soldiers' reliefs at the barracks on the Petrisberg in Trier.

From 1949 to 1956 Schwippert was a lecturer at the “ Werkkunstschule Münster ” and from 1957 to 1962 at the “ Werkkunstschule Wuppertal ”, which later became what is now the Bergische Universität Wuppertal .

His extensive sculptural oeuvre is scattered over numerous public institutions in the country, both as a museum property and integrated as “art in architecture”. The recognition of his work and activity was reflected in many honors such as the Cornelius Prize of the City of Düsseldorf, the Karl Ernst Osthaus Prize of the City of Hagen or the Max Slevogt Medal .

In 1963 he was appointed professor for sculpture and building sculpture at the Cologne factory schools and taught there for five years until his retirement . He died in Hünerbach in 1983.

His work remained almost entirely figurative. He often designed Christian themes for church commissions. Standing individual figures are typical of his work, and he also created torsos , portrait heads and reliefs.
