El libro libre (German: The free book ) was a publishing house founded in 1942 for German - speaking anti - fascist emigration in Mexico .

history

The publishing house was founded on the occasion of the 9th anniversary of the book burning in Mexico City in 1942 by members of the Heinrich Heine Club and the Alemania Libre / Free Germany movement. The publisher developed during the Second World War the most important publisher of German exile literature between 1942 and 1945 led the publisher Walter Janka , who in the USA living Wieland Herzfelde advised the publisher. However, the hierarchy within the publishing house is not described as static: Janka was not only the publisher's director, but also a typesetter and designer of the publisher's emblem, an open red book that smashes a black swastika with the spine down.

Authors

The publisher published a large number of works, especially authors close to the Communist Party of Germany , who are classics of German-language exile literature, including The Seventh Cross by Anna Seghers and Market Place of Sensations and Discoveries in Mexico by Egon Erwin Kisch .
