Ferdinand Opll

Ferdinand Opll (born March 30, 1950 in Mödling ) is an Austrian historian and archivist .

Ferdinand Opll studied history, German literature and art history at the University of Vienna from 1969 . Opll received his doctorate from Heinrich Appelt in 1974 with a thesis on the itinerary of Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa . He completed his habilitation in Vienna in 1985. From 1989 to 2010 he was director of the Vienna City and State Archives , headed the Institute for Urban History Research of the Ludwig Boltzmann Society from 2002 to 2009 and is a lecturer in medieval history and historical auxiliary sciences at the University of Vienna. He is also a member of numerous scientific commissions (including the Institute for Comparative Urban History in Münster / Westphalia; Commission internationale pour l'histoire des villes , Austrian working group for urban history research). In 1996 he became an "associate university professor". By decree of July 13, 1999, he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Spanish Order of Civil Merit. On December 16, 2010 he received the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, 1st class . On March 15, 2017, he was awarded the “Theodor-Georg-Ritter-von-Karajan Medal” by the Association for the History of the City of Vienna for achievements in the field of Viennese urban history research.

Opll's research focuses on the history of the high Middle Ages , in particular the time of Friedrich Barbarossa, comparative city history, archivistics and the history of Austria, especially the history of the city of Vienna. Opll's Barbarossa biography was published in its fourth edition in 2009 (first in 1990; 1994 in Italian, 2001 in Czech; 2010 in Russian).
