Peter Dressler
Peter Dressler (born September 17, 1942 in Brașov , Romania ; † September 15, 2013 in Prague ) was an Austrian photographer specializing in artistic photography .
Life
Peter Dressler was born in Brașov (German: Kronstadt) in Romania in 1942. The first photographic works were created in the 1960s. He completed his painting studies from 1966 to 1971 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Gustav Hessing with a diploma. He then taught there from 1972 to 2008, initially as a lecturer with Gustav Hessing, then as an assistant to Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Hubert Schmalix and finally as an assistant professor of painting.
Dressler created “photo stories” with a metaphorical visual language through staged photography. Public spaces that he found by chance and everyday situations served him as scenes in which he made temporary interventions for his photographs. - His artist book Zwischenpiel contains photographs of his urban explorations in Vienna in the early 1970s, but it was only published in 1989. Between 1975 and 1978 Peter Dressler and Franz Zadrazil made the black and white film Sonderfahrt ; an audiovisual mosaic was created as a mixture of associatively found and played.
Dressler was buried at the Mauer cemetery (group 41, row 1, number 1) in Vienna. The artistic estate is in the Fotohof archive .
In 2016, the Kunst Haus Wien is showing the first posthumous retrospective by Peter Dressler.
