KUNST HAUS WIEN , which opened in 1991, is a museum designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser . It is located in the Lower Weißgerberstraße 13 in the 3rd Vienna district , highway .

It is the world's only permanent exhibition of the works of Friedensreich Hundertwasser, and there are also regular temporary exhibitions of works by other artists. The exhibition area is around 1600 m².

The museum

In order to realize the idea of a museum dedicated to Hundertwasser's art, but also suitable for temporary exhibitions, the buildings of the former Thonet furniture factory from 1892 were rebuilt. This redesign was planned by the architect Peter Pelikan and carried out between 1989 and 1991; the client was the Bank for Labor and Economy . The opening took place on April 9, 1991.

The building is designed in the typical Hundertwasser style, so straight lines are rarely found. The floor is uneven, colored ceramics and mosaics determine the surfaces and green plants are included in the room design. In the foyer there is a fountain designed by Hans Muhr . On the ground floor there is also a museum shop and a restaurant, which with its plant-rich design resembles a winter garden . An uneven winding staircase leads to the upper floors, two of which are dedicated to Hundertwasser's work. Hundertwasser had a porch with a glass front added to these rooms so that they are adequately flooded with daylight . Changing special exhibitions by international artists are shown on the third and fourth floors of the building.

Set within 400 meters, in the bowling alley 34-38, corner Löwengasse, is the 1985 completed Hundertwasser House , a designed also to the ideas Hundertwasser Residential Building of the City of Vienna.

Construction engineering

The building was built traditionally, only non-load-bearing facade elements and adjacent components were clad with glazed mosaic stones (not all over the area). In contrast to Antoni Gaudí , Hundertwasser used symmetrical mosaic stones that were not arranged at random. Likewise, the size of the stones is not accidental, which until then was only common for mosaics on buildings in industrial production. The special feature of this building was created through the inclusion of almost all facade elements in the overall picture and the deliberate concealment of the floor boundaries. Hundertwasser said of the uneven floor of the house:

"A lively, uneven floor means a regaining of human dignity that has been taken away from people in leveling urban development."
