Forgotten Tomb is an Italian Black Doom / Dark Metal band from Piacenza with connections to the right-wing extremist National Socialist Black Metal scene.

Band history

Forgotten Tomb was founded as a black metal project in 1999 by Mr. Morbid ( vocals , electric guitar ) in collaboration with Torment ( electric bass ), who soon left the band. The debut EP Obscura Arcana Mortis was produced by Mr. Morbid alone in 1999 and released a year later by Treblinka Records with an edition of 215 copies. The first album Songs to Leave was released on the Swedish label Suicide Services. Then Wedebrand, the former drummer of Shining , replaced the drum computer for the recordings of the next album . Springtime Depression was released on the French label Adipocere Records after separating from Suicide Services. Due to the great success of the last two albums, Mr. Morbid began looking for musicians for live performances, including a replacement for Then Wedebrand, who left the band immediately after the recordings for Springtime Depression . With this new line-up he also recorded the two albums Love's Burial Ground and Negative Megalomania .

Music and lyrics

Suicide Services compares the music with early works by Katatonia and Shining , which means that the band's musical concept is relatively broad. The group describes their style as "Depressive and Manipulating Dark Metal", whereby they took over many musical stylistic Black Doom elements. What is noticeable on the later albums is the slow tempo of the pieces, which only rises to a black metal level for brief moments of aggression. Likewise, the importance of electronics has increased significantly in the course of the band's history.

The lyrics of the band are mainly about suicide and depression , which means that the group is also classified as Depressive Black Metal . The first EP also contains misanthropic texts. Mr. Morbid sees himself inspired by Katatonia and Burzum and describes himself as "a completely depressed, paranoid and suicide-fixated person" (German: 'a completely depressive, paranoid and suicide-fixated person'). Mr. Morbid sees Black Sabbath as another important inspiration .

“Any metal band that says they are not influenced by Black Sabbath should eat their own shit and kill themselves! Sure, with some bands you can hear the influence a little more than with others, but basically every band is influenced by Black Sabbath! Apart from that, there is also a lot of old-school punk and post-punk as well as dark wave from the eighties. "

- Mr. Morbid

On the album Negative Megalomania , a Gothic-Rock influence is evident. The overall sound is much more open and rockier, the guttural singing is complemented by clear singing. The album contains only five pieces, four of which have a playing time of over ten minutes.

criticism

Anti-fascist circles criticized a homophobic and anti-Semitic utterance by Mr. Morbids, which he called “eGay” and “damn Jewish business” due to the trading of Forgotten Tomb LPs on the eBay auction platform . Such statements, the appearance of Forgotten Tombs as the opening act for Absurd at a concert in Milan in December 2005, as well as the participation of Mr. Morbid and Razor SK in an Italian right-wing rock band, caused a boycott by Legacy magazine . Forgotten Tombs bassist Algol also plays with Kaiser W. von Ad Hominem , Basilisk von Eternity and IIl Colonnello von Frangar in the multinational project Dead ?. In 2013 Forgotten Tomb was supposed to perform at an NSBM festival in Brandenburg; the festival was canceled.
