Nordvargr is the pseudonym of the Swedish musician Henrik Björkk. Björkk is active in numerous bands and projects, most of which can be classified as industrial or black metal . His most famous band and solo projects are MZ. 412 (machine room 412), Folkstorm and Toroidh. He also works or has worked with Forgotten Tomb , Naer Mataron and the EBM band Pouppée Fabrikk and heads the record label 205 Recordings.

Nordvargr developed a conscious interest in music in the 1970s after he came across the band KISS , which he was particularly fascinated by their performance. He was mainly interested in the metal scene until he discovered the electronic band Kraftwerk , whose robot-like singing and machine beats significantly changed his image of music. When he was 16 or 17 he bought his first synthesizer (Roland SH-101); At that time he began to be interested in bands like DAF and Front 242 and wanted to make similar music, which led to him forming the EBM band Pouppée Fabrikk with friends, with which he had his first successes.

Content

In terms of content, Nordvargr is mainly concerned with the Second World War (various language samples and images are used again and again) and totalitarianism, as well as with Satanism ( Infernal Affairs by MZ. 412 was published on June 6, 2006, a game with the symbolism of the number 666 ) .

On the subject of Satanism and controversial content, Nordvargr's bandmate Drakhon says: “It is not our aim to tell people what is wrong or what is right in the world. We are not the ones who improve the world, or the ones who imply that everybody should convert to Satanism or some other useful philosophy. It is, however, important to get people's attention and to point out the rotten carcasses in our society. In that respect, I believe that MZ412 always have been down to the point. […] If someone decides to burn up a church or just meditate to our music, it is, indeed, up to him or her. ”Nordvargr described Satanism as a natural way of life, while this was not the case with Christianity .

Nordvargr himself, when asked what Satanism meant to him, explained: “This is a philosophical thing ... We try to be free from Christian values and Christian morals. We realize ourselves as masters of our own reality and that is why we shape it according to our will. "

Regarding political or apparently political statements, as they are often used by industrial bands, including Nordvargr, he says: “As long as his personal views doesn't affect the music all too much, it doesn't matter. But music should not be propaganda ... besides, I think most people are intelligent enough to not change political views after listening to music - that is something that comes from the values and morals you have been learned growing up. ”A similar comment was made his bandmate Drakhon. Nordvargr also thinks that his fascination with the Second World War and National Socialist Germany are not politically motivated; however, Kaiadas positions himself and the band Naer Mataron, in which Nordvargr also participates, in the NSBM environment, and Forgotten Tomb also came under criticism from anti-fascist circles.

Projects

Nordvargr with Poupée Fabrikk at the E-Tropolis 2014

Nordvargr's approach to the compositions depends on the project he's working with: while Hydra Head 9 is based on improvisation, Toroidh is usually very thought out. The Ikonen magazine described the sound of its industrial-oriented publications as "mostly drone-dominated output" characterized by dark ambient , death industrial and power electronics .

MZ. 412

Maschinenzimmer 412 was founded in 1988 and signed in the same year with the famous Cold Meat Industry label , which has released all of the band's albums so far. After a creative break due to a lack of inspiration and the departure of several founding members, the band became MZ in 1995. 412 reanimated: “When there were some line-up changes within the band and the way we express ourselves changed, we wanted to make this clear in our name. That has something to do with rebirth ... ”With his oldest band (founded in 1988) Nordvargr plays death industrial or ritual , the music is often referred to as“ black industrial ”. The band members named are: Henrik Nordvargr Björkk, Jonas Drakhon Aneheim and Jouni Ulvtharm Ollila. In the Ablaze , the music was described as "dark, evil and electronic with satanic undertones" and as "a must for dark unholy rituals". This band was at times strongly influenced by Black Metal and its aesthetics. a. shows this to a cover photo of a burning church on the cover of Burning the Temple of God , black metal guitar sound on the same album, and the appearance of the band members with corpse paint , rivet and nail bracelets. On Infernal Affairs, however, the black metal bonds are significantly weaker. MZ. 412 is considered "the heart of his work, even if it was perhaps a more direct continuation in Folkstorm and got a little brother with Goatvargr".

Folkstorm

Folkstorm is a now discontinued solo project within the genres of noise and power electronics , which was founded under the name Volkssturm. In Ikonen magazine it was referred to as a more direct sequel to MZ. 412, also Nordvargr himself sees it as a distorted, noisy version of MZ. 412: “I started with Folkstorm because I wanted to do something similar, but different from MZ.412. I experimented with different recording techniques and sound sources to get a raw, dirtier sound. Folkstorm no longer exists, but there is still a lot of material that has not yet been released to this day. Folkstorm was actually a one-man band, but Ulvtharm and Mrs. Nordvargr sometimes helped out. I chose the name because Folkstorm sounds good. It's a very raw and powerful word. ”According to Nordvargr, it is not a political project, but very explicit, extreme and influenced by the war.

Toroidh

Also a solo project, whose music moves between the areas of ambient and folk , or, according to self-statement, ambient / martial / folk.
