The Steinberg is a 251  m high mountain in the 23rd district of Liesing in Vienna .

geography

The Steinberg is located in the Mauer part of the district between the Rosenhügel in the north and the Sauberg in the south. The next western and highest elevation of the ridge, which is separated from the actual Steinberg by a saddle at Karl-Schwed-Gasse, is called the Reiterberg ( 256  m ). The Steinberg and the Reiterberg belong to the geological level of the Sarmatian .

Under the name Steinberg there is also an eight counting district of official statistics. In addition to the mountain itself, this includes other areas such as the southern slope of the rose hill.

history

The Steinberg, located between the old town centers of Mauer and Atzgersdorf , was initially hardly built up and was mainly used for agriculture. The eponymous hard Atzgersdorfer sand-lime brick has been quarried in a quarry in the southeast for centuries . In 1867, today's Mauer cemetery was consecrated on the Reiterberg. Between 1870 and 1873, two aqueducts of the first Viennese spring water pipeline were built for the Viennese water supply . The Mauer aqueduct crosses the Endresstrasse in the valley between Steinberg and Sauberg, which the Knotzenbach used to flow through, the Speising aqueduct crosses the Tullnertalgasse in the Rosenberggraben between Steinberg and Rosenhügel, which the Niederreiterbergbach used to flow through . The large-scale development with residential buildings did not begin until the 20th century. In 1979, on the southeast slope of the Steinberg, which was already in Atzgersdorf, the municipal summer bathing Höpflerbad was built in place of a private bathing establishment that had existed on the site of the abandoned sand-lime quarry. Since 1993, the Mariapolizentrum Am Spiegeln has been an educational center for the Focolare Movement on Steinberg.
