Theodor Georg von Karajan , since 1869 Knight von Karajan (born January 22, 1810 in Vienna ; † April 28, 1873 ibid), Dr. phil., was a Greek-born Austrian German scholar , historian and politician .
family
Theodor von Karajan comes from a family named Karagiannis of Greek origin from Kozani (then belonging to the Ottoman Empire under the name Rumelia , today Northern Greece) in Macedonia , which is first mentioned there in 1743, and was the son of the merchant Georg Karajan, actually Geórgios Karagiánnis , Owner of a cotton shop in Chemnitz, Saxony . Georg Karajan was born with his wife and his sons Demeter and Theodor on June 1, 1792 during the imperial vicariate by the Saxon Elector Friedrich August III. raised to the hereditary imperial nobility. The recognition of this nobility in Austria took place for his widow and sons by decree of January 4, 1832.
Theodor von Karajan was the father of Max Theodor von Karajan and great-grandfather of the conductor Herbert von Karajan (1908–1989).
Life
Theodor von Karajan studied philosophy at the University of Vienna from 1826 to 1828 . He then entered the Austrian civil service and worked for the court war council , the court chamber archive and finally in the court library .
Because of his historical research, especially on comparative linguistics and the Middle Ages, he became a member and honorary member of numerous historical and academic associations throughout Europe from the 1840s. In 1848 Karajan became a member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences , of which he was Vice President from 1851 and President from 1866.
From May 24 to September 20, 1848 he was a member of the Guntersdorf parliament in the Frankfurt National Assembly , where he was part of the casino faction .
In 1853 Karajan also became a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences , and in 1859 of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
From 1867 until his death he was a member of the Austrian manor house .
Theodor von Karajan was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Leopold by Emperor Franz Joseph I in Vienna with the highest resolution of May 27, 1869 , and in September 1869 he was raised to the hereditary Austrian knighthood as "Ritter von Karajan" due to the statutes of the order .

Appreciation
The Theodor-Georg-Ritter-von-Karajan Medal is awarded by the Association for the History of the City of Vienna .
His honorary grave is located at the Mauer cemetery (group 8, row 1, number 20) in Vienna.
In 1889 the Karajangasse in Vienna- Brigittenau (20th district) was named after him.
