Max Theodor von Karajan (born July 1, 1833 in Vienna , † August 20, 1914 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian classical philologist from the von Karajan family , who was a professor at the University of Graz from 1857 to 1904 .

Life

Max Theodor von Karajan, the son of the historian Theodor von Karajan (1810–1873), studied classical philology at the universities of Göttingen , Berlin and Bonn . The fraternity of Hannovera Göttingen appointed him an honorary member in the winter semester of 1854/55; in Bonn he joined the Frankonia fraternity in 1855/56 . He was in 1857 at the University of Bonn in absentia (absent) PhD . His dissertation, written for this purpose, dealt with Roman historiography ( De Romanorum annalibus et historiis ).

In the year of his doctorate , Karajan completed his habilitation at the University of Graz with a thesis on the Scholien zur Odyssey . Karajan worked in Graz for the rest of his life: initially as a private lecturer , from 1859 as a titular associate professor, from 1863 as a regular associate professor, from 1867 as a full professor. In 1869/1870 and 1889/1890 he was Dean of the Philosophical Faculty, in 1873/1874 Rector of the University of Graz. In 1904 Karajan retired.

Outside of his academic teaching activities, Karajan did not stand out through philological work. His only publication in this area apart from his habilitation thesis (the dissertation was not printed) was an essay on the recitative parts of the Greek tragedians (1893).

Karajan's work was more important for the university and city of Graz. Together with Ferdinand Bischoff (1826–1915) and Friedrich von Hausegger , he founded the Grazer Singverein. For its fortieth foundation festival, he wrote the publication “The Singing Association in Graz in the First Forty Years of Its Existence (1866 / 67-1905 / 06)”, published in 1909. As a representative of the university in the permanent building committee, he influenced the new building measures at the individual institutes and the main building of the university. For this purpose he wrote the history of spatial development at the University of Graz.
