The Classical Philology at the University of Graz emerged in the 19th century from the literature scientific and aesthetic subjects. For the first time in 1813 a professorship for "Latin-Classical Literature" was established. In the course of the reform of the Austrian education system in 1848, two chairs for “Classical Philology and Aesthetics” were established. In 1863, Karl Schenkl was the first professor of philology in Graz whose chair was exclusively for "classical philology".
